Dr. Derek Weitzel is a research assistant professor in the School of Computing at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Since 2009, he has played a critical role in providing distributed computing solutions to national cyberinfrastructures. He currently leads the operations of the National Research Platform and contributes as a core member of the OSG Production Operations Team.

Derek’s research focuses on distributed data management, particularly for shared and opportunistic storage environments. His work explores scalable solutions for secure credential management and network monitoring to enhance the performance and security of distributed computing platforms. Additionally, he is involved in optimizing network analytics to support high-performance computing workloads.

With extensive experience in academic and large-scale research computing infrastructures, Derek continues to contribute to the development and advancement of distributed computing technologies. His expertise in managing complex systems and ensuring secure, efficient operations has made him a key figure in national and international research initiatives. Through his leadership and collaborative efforts, Dr. Weitzel is driving innovations that enhance the capabilities and resilience of next-generation cyberinfrastructures.
